Minerva fountain

The Minervabrunnen is a wall fountain located on the Stubenring in the inner city of Vienna .

description

The Minerva fountain is located in a niche with terracotta decoration in the exposed brick connecting wall between the University of Applied Arts and the Museum of Applied Arts .

On the brick wall clad with stone there is a shell-shaped water basin made of white karst marble from Marzano , which is filled by a gargoyle designed as a head mask. The water does not flow over the edge, but through a gargoyle also designed as a mask into a shallow water basin made of Wöllersdorf stone , the border of which rises only slightly above the level of the pavement. A glass mosaic image of the goddess Minerva with a staff and an owl is located above the stone wall cladding of the Minerva fountain. In her right hand, Minerva holds a ball that serves as a location for a much smaller representation of the goddess of victory Nike .

The stone-made parts of the fountain come from the sculptor Josef Pokorny , the mosaic was created in the glass factory of Antonio Salviati in Murano based on designs by Ferdinand Laufberger and Heinrich von Ferstel . In the interrupted round arched gable of the fountain is the coat of arms of the city of Vienna, while in the pointed gable of the connecting wall the Austro-Hungarian state coat of arms is attached.

history

The Minerva fountain was created for the art gallery of the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873 and, on the initiative of Rudolf Eitelberger, Ritter von Edelberg , was purchased at state expense and installed here.
