The Donauweibchenbrunnen in the part of the Vienna City Park located in the 1st district of Vienna Inner City is one of six fountains in this park.
description
The Donauweibchenbrunnen consists of a stone column made of karst limestone, four attached round fountain bowls and head masks as gargoyles.
On the top of the stone pillar stands the figure of the Danube female, a legendary figure who allegedly helped troubled fishermen or warned them of the Danube floods . At their feet is a small shield with the city arms of Vienna .
history
The Donauweibchenbrunnen was originally created for the Fischhof by Hanns Gasser on behalf of the City of Vienna in 1858 , but was not erected there, but initially deposited in a municipal warehouse for two years. On September 30, 1865, it was finally unveiled as the city park's first figural ornament.
During the Second World War, the Danube female , originally made of Carrara marble, was badly damaged, so that the sculptor Fellinger made a stone copy in 1948, which now replaces the original.
Original and copies
In the Hotel Imperial on Vienna's Ringstrasse there is either the original or a copy of the Danube female. In the Wien Museum on Karlsplatz a reduced and also made of Carrara marble version of the fountain sculpture is kept. Another copy was in the former Roman bath in Vienna's 2nd district .
