Dragon-shaped gargoyles

The Guardian Angel Fountain is a fountain on Rilkeplatz in Vienna's 4th district of Wieden .

history

In the course of the construction of the Kaiser-Ferdinand-Wasserleitung a pool was set up in front of the Wiedner Paulanerkirche at the end of 1843 . This was replaced by the Guardian Angel Fountain in 1846. After the Archduke Rainer Fountain on the nearby Rilkeplatz was destroyed during the Second World War and the space in front of the Paulanerkirche had to be cleared for traffic reasons, the Guardian Angel Fountain was moved to Rilkeplatz in 1963. The listed fountain ( list entry ) was unveiled at its new and current location on December 10, 1963.

layout

A metal-framed stone column on which a guardian angel stands rises from an octagonal fountain basin. Four dragon-shaped gargoyles with the Viennese coat of arms as breast shields are arranged on the base of the column . The designs come from August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll , as well as a model from Johann Preleuthner , after whom Anton Dominik Fernkorn made the casting and the chasing .
