Danube mermaid fountain: the Danube mermaid

The Donaunixenbrunnen is a fountain in Vienna's 1st district, Inner City .

description

The Donaunixenbrunnen is located in the hexagonal so-called bazaar courtyard of the shopping arcade in the Palais Ferstel between Freyung and Herrengasse and has a total height of 19 Viennese feet (6 meters) with a pool diameter of 10 feet (3.2 meters).

The basin is made of Adnet marble , the column with the mermaids, the upper bowl, the three figures and the Danube mermaid was cast from 75 Viennese hundredweight (about 4200 kilograms) bronze .

Three mermaids emerge from the water of the marble basin, shake hands and dance around the column protruding from the center of the water basin. Above them is another, smaller water basin, which is supported by foliage and three water birds that serve as gargoyles. There are three figures above this basin: a merchant, a shipbuilder and a fisherman.

The end of the column is the figure of the upright Danube female with flowing hair and half-raised right hand, in which she is holding a small fish.

The fountain was designed by Heinrich von Ferstel , who also planned the palace, which was built as a bank building. Anton Dominik Ritter von Fernkorn's part in this fountain lay in the shaping and casting of the bronze parts, while the court and middle-class town stonemason Anton Wasserburger made the marble basin.

The Danube Mermaid Fountain, which cost 25,000 guilders, was unveiled in October 1861.
