history

WIG 74 in the year of opening
Monorail 1974

After the great success with the “Vienna International Garden Show 1964” ( WIG 64 ) in the Donaupark in the 22nd district of Vienna, the Vienna City Council wanted another international garden show to be held in Vienna. The former brick area on the south-eastern slope of the Laaer Berg, which had also served as a location for monumental films from the silent film era, was rounded off by the purchase of gardening grounds and vineyards . It was the ideal location for the project and the associated construction of a large green area. There has been a spa at Oberlaaer Schwefelquellen since 1969 . After an international competition, which the Frankfurt garden architect Erich Hanke won in 1969, working groups of landscape architects from different countries were formed. The best designs from all projects were combined in the planning and implementation.

The "Vienna International Garden Show 1974" ( WIG 74 ) was a great success with 2.6 million visitors, just like its predecessor in the Donaupark. The press response was in part extremely critical. Well-known architects such as Gustav Peichl and Roland Rainer would have preferred greening the city center, Rainer missed a simple football field. A monorail running in the park turned out to be a bad investment and had to be dismantled after a few years, an adjoining amusement park showed itself to be in deficit from the start. As in the case of the Danube Park, the rest of the park furniture proved to be of limited viability. Among other things, this affected the "Utopian Garden".

At the end of 1974 the area of the garden show was finally converted into a public park, which is very popular. Vienna did not host any other international garden shows, however, and the trend in the following years tended to move away from the maintenance (and cost) intensive show green to natural design, as in the Wienerberg recreation area .

Subject areas

Plan of the spa park

The Kurpark Oberlaa is divided into different themed areas in order to offer visitors different relaxation rooms.

Allergy garden

On an “ allergy information mile”, you can see the different pollen flight times, the distribution areas and other botanical information in front of the respective plants.

Baroque fountain garden

This fountain garden is actually the former "German Nations Garden", it was reactivated in 2001/2002 and equipped with many partly historical fountains, a stream, shrub beds and some seating.

Flower maze

The flower labyrinth with a diameter of 18 m was laid out in 2004. It was modeled on the one at Hellbrunn Palace , but only offers one way and does not allow any decision-making options. There are similar facilities in Vienna, for example a maze in the park of Schönbrunn Palace and the butterfly labyrinth in the florarium.

Movie city

Well-known silent films by the Sascha-Filmindustrie film studio were shot in the film city in the 1920s , including the monumental film Sodom and Gomorrah and The Slave Queen . Every year in summer, these productions are shown in an open-air cinema in the Kurpark.

The Takasakipark was the Japanese national contribution on the occasion of the WIG 1974. It was furnished according to the plans of the architect Kunsaku Nakame. After the WIG, many of the national contributions were removed again, but the city of Takasaki advocated the rebuilding of this contribution and in the 1990s it was reconstructed under the direction of the architect Ikeda Tadashi.

Love garden

The love garden was also built on the occasion of the WIG and equipped with romantic benches, swings and arbors. All metals originally used were painted in 2001 and the garden was furnished with exclusively white-blooming summer flowers, perennials, roses and shrubs. Many wedding couples can be photographed here.

The skateland

In the vicinity of the children's playground, the beach volleyball court and the giant swing, a 1,800 m² skate area was built. Originally, during the WIG 1974 and in the years after, this area was the so-called "moon playground".
