On Maria-Theresien-Platz between the Natural History and Art History Museums in Vienna's 1st  district, the Inner City, there are four tritons and naiad fountains next to the central Maria Theresa monument .

Building history

Maria-Theresien-Platz, sometimes referred to as Maria-Theresien-Park, was laid out between the two former court museums and was to become part of the Kaiserforum . The opening took place at the same time as the unveiling of the Maria Theresa monument in 1888. In 1890 the groups of horse tamers were set up and the enclosure built.

Today the entire ensemble monument is part of the World Heritage Site Historic Center of Vienna .

Artistic design

The four triton and naiad fountains form the centers of the four large lawns, which are formed by the main connecting paths of Maria-Theresien-Platz. The fountains were built between 1887 and 1890, the year they were erected. They were unveiled in 1894.

They were made by

What they have in common are the circular basins with central groups of figures made of Carrara marble on stylized rock formations made of conglomerate rock as well as the four diagonal gargoyles each. Fountains with naiads and tritons or human figures in the form of children were given thematically.

The fountain on Museumstrasse by the Kunsthistorisches Museum was designed by Edmund Paul Andreas Hofmann von Aspernburg. Just like Anton Schmidgruber with his two fountains at the Burgring , he solved the task by dividing the tritons and nymphs into space and enriching them with individual motifs. Hugo Haerdtl gave his burlesque fountain figures on Museumstrasse near the Natural History Museum a slightly erotic color.
