The Arthur-Schnitzler-Hof is a council in the 19th Vienna district Döbling . It was built between 1959 and 1960 according to plans by the architects Michel Engelhart and Alois Machatschek and comprises 47 apartments. The residential complex is close to the border to the districts of Alsergrund and Währing at Döblinger Hauptstrasse 1 and Währinger Gürtel 141 ( cadastral municipality Oberdöbling ).
history
Originally the property of the residential complex belonged to the Jewish cemetery in Währing . After the National Socialists expropriated the Jewish Community of Vienna , the entire cemetery area became the property of the City of Vienna in 1942. On Döblinger Hauptstrasse, around 1,500 to 2,000 graves were destroyed by excavation work for an extinguishing water pond that had never been realized, whereby the religious community had previously exhumed the remains of the graves concerned as much as possible and buried them in a mass grave at the Vienna Central Cemetery . After the Second World War, the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde managed to restore the cemetery area after tough negotiations, but in return it had to cede the destroyed area on Döblinger Hauptstrasse to the City of Vienna. Although the municipality of Vienna assured the religious community that it would never build on the property, on May 12, 1958, following the municipal council resolution of March 28, 1958, the area was rededicated to building class IV. After that, between 1959 and 1960, the construction of the community building took place was named after the writer Arthur Schnitzler .
Between 2004 and 2005, the community building was renovated for around 870,000 euros, with the replacement of the windows and doors as well as the installation of full protective thermal insulation.
Building
After the first three high-rise buildings in Döbling were built between 1958 and 1959 in the Helmut-Qualtinger-Hof , Michel Engelhart and Alois Machatschek planned a significantly higher residential complex on the gently sloping site with the 13-storey Arthur Schnitzler-Hof. The structure consists of two parts of the building that are shifted in height and position and connected by a common staircase. The architects relocated the two buildings by a half-story and structured the simple facade using the vertical color scheme in yellow, gray and yellow. On the facades facing the Währinger Gürtel or Billrothstrasse, there are balconies in the middle, while the staircase jumps back slightly from the facade. To the left of the entrance to the Arthur-Schnitzler-Hof is the “Reiter” fountain, which was designed by Franz Fischer .
