Jersey Shore (English short for: The New Jersey Coast ) is a reality TV show that is broadcast on MTV and VIVA and accompanies eight young Americans (mostly with Italian roots) on their summer vacation. third, fifth, and finally final sixth seasons in Seaside Heights in Ocean County , New Jersey, in the second season in Miami Beach and in the fourth in Florence , Italy . The first season was filmed in August 2009, primarily in the actors' holiday home, but also in Toms River, Neptune andAtlantic City . The series led to much controversy in the United States because of the stereotypical portrayal of Italian-American youth.

production

One of the triggers for the success was the broadcast of a punch as a preview of the second episode towards the end of the first episode of the first season, which stuck Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi to the ground. Although the excerpt was not broadcast in the second episode, the scene soon circulated on the Internet and the number of viewers doubled from the first to the second episode. Since the first season of the series was a great success for MTV, the broadcaster announced in January 2010 that it would shoot a second season with a total of 12 episodes, which should be broadcast in the summer of the same year. The first half of this season was filmed in South Beach, near Miami Beach, in May 2010. The rest of the season was filmed on the Jersey Shore again. It was later determined that there should be enough footage from Miami for a separate season, which should begin on July 29, 2010. The footage from Jersey Shore was supposed to be used for a third season.

The fourth season was filmed in Florence in May 2011. The premiere reached another record high for MTV with 8.78 million viewers. Immediately after the fourth season, filming began for the fifth season, back on the Jersey Shore.

From January 5 to March 5, 2012 the episodes of the fifth season were broadcast in the USA. On October 4, 2012, the sixth and final season of the series began broadcasting. The finale was broadcast on December 20, 2012.

Overall, the series has spawned two spin-offs : one with Snooki and JWoww entitled Snooki & JWoww , the second season of which started on January 8, 2013 in the US, and one about the career of Pauly D under the name The Pauly D Project . The latter was discontinued after a season of 12 episodes. There is also a successor to the Jersey Shore called 'Geordie Shore', which is not filmed in America, but in Newcastle, England.

Adaptations

In Great Britain the show Geordie Shore has been running since May 24, 2011 , which transfers the concept of the program to a group of people from the British city of Newcastle upon Tyne . Three adaptations have been produced in Germany since 2012: one of them was Party, Brother! (13 episodes) that the sender VIVA has been shown since July 5, 2012 broadcast We Love Lloret radio station ProSieben (6 episodes) and its sequel, We Love Sölden (4 episodes). In August 2013, MTV Polska announced a Polish adaptation of the program under the name Warsaw Shore - Ekipa z Warszawy .

reception

While the number of viewers rose steadily, critics and Italian-American interest groups were rather negative about the show. The chairman of the Unico interest group, Andre DiMino, complained that Italian-Americans were now being portrayed as clowns after being portrayed as gangsters in The Sopranos .

Nancy Franklin , television critic for The New Yorker , explains the success of the show:

"'Jersey Shore' makes us feel like anthropologists, secretly observing a new native tribe through a gap in a tree."

- Nancy Franklin

The South Park series dedicates an entire episode to the series ("So'n Jersey Ding" (English title) or "New Jersey", 9th episode of the fourteenth season, 204th episode in general).

Others

In August 2011, it was announced that the fashion company Abercrombie & Fitch had offered the actors of Jersey Shore money to stop wearing the brand's clothing as it was reputationally damaging.
