Alois Machatschek

Alois Machatschek (born November 25, 1928 in Bratislava ; † May 5, 2014 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian architect, building researcher, university professor and preservationist.

Machatschek, the son of a building contractor, completed his studies in architecture at the Vienna University of Technology and worked as an assistant at the Institute for Baukuns and building surveys with Karl Holey . In 1961 he acquired the Dr. of the technique. His early construction tasks included participating in the planning of the Arthur-Schnitzler-Hof community building in Vienna-Döbling. Machatschek devoted himself primarily to historical building research in the Mediterranean region in the 1960s and completed his habilitation with a thesis on ancient grave structures in the area of Cilicia . As a result, he turned more and more to the preservation of monuments . The restoration of Harrach 's Castle in Rohrau (Lower Austria) was followed by numerous orders from the Liechtenstein family . Machatschek was best known for his careful and high-quality restoration of historical buildings. Together with Wilfried Schermann , Machatschek devoted himself, among other things, to the renovation of the baroque Palais Caprara-Geymüller in Wallnerstraße (1986–1988) and the so-called Palais Ferstel (1978–1986), but also Otto Wagner's suburban line of the Vienna Stadtbahn , which after decades of Shutdown in 1987 when line S 45 of the Wiener Schnellbahn was reopened. There were also some new buildings in a postmodern style inspired by Wagner , for example at the Vienna Krottenbachstrasse stop and at the Vienna Breitensee stop . Machatschek taught as a professor at the Technical University of Vienna and was President of the Austrian Society for the Preservation of Monuments and Sites from 1998 to 2006 .
