The Hannakenbrunnen is a listed fountain ( list entry ) in the 1st district of Vienna, Innere Stadt Am Gestade, near the Maria am Gestade church .

history

After demolishing a number of houses near the Maria am Gestade church and an architectural competition, the architect Hubert Matuschek built the staircase from Tiefen Graben to the church in 1937. The Hannakenbrunnen was built as part of this staircase on the small square at the lower end by the sculptor Rudolf Schmidt . The unveiling took place on December 10, 1937.

layout

In an elongated octagonal fountain basin with a capacity of about 4 cubic meters of water, located on a flat pedestal, is the stone plinth, which carries a block-like group of figures with three people, a dog, a jug and leafy vines. Two of these people are busy carrying the third - injured - person.

As a gargoyle there is a fish head on each side of the base.

Both the basin and the base with the group of figures from Lindabrunn conglomerate were made .

Rudolf Schmidt reached in the design of Hannakenbrunnens the history of the so-called Hannakenkönigs - one from the East Moravian Hanna coming Bader - on who allegedly brought the darkness of the night passers-by intentionally falling to then earn their treatment.
