Rudolf Schmidt (born April 19, 1894 in Vienna ; † March 7, 1980 ibid) was an Austrian sculptor , medalist and art historian .

Life

Schmidt graduated from secondary school and then learned the craft of gemstone and gem cutter . He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, his teachers were Otto Hofner and Josef Müllner . From 1923 he was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus , whose Golden Medal of Honor he was awarded in 1930. This was followed by the Austrian State Prize in 1935, the Appreciation Prize of the City of Vienna in 1951 and the Federal Ministry of Education Prize in 1956 .

Schmidt lived in Rodaun for a long time . In addition to his work as a sculptor, he was professor of art education in the subject of "modeling" at the Academy of Fine Arts. He created numerous large sculptures , such as the group of fountains near Maria am Gestade . Schmidt also produced numerous medals , such as the Austrian Olympic Medal in 1954.

Only the first volume of his Austrian artist lexicon was published during his lifetime. The extensive unpublished material was purchased by the Belvedere in 1981 and is publicly available there.

His grave is at Rodaun Cemetery .
