description
Architect Otto Prutscher, a student of Josef Hoffmann , created the plans for this community building, which was built in 1927-28. It is one of the numerous social housing structures built at the time with the help of the housing tax, as they were typical for Red Vienna . The facility offers space for 146 apartments. The two corner designs are particularly striking. The residential building is structured by polygonal bay windows, terrace protrusions and groups of pointed arches. At the corners and at the entrance there are sculptures of playing children, in the courtyard there is a sculpture depicting a reading woman with a child, created by Rudolf Schmidt in 1930 .
The building was named after the folk singer, poet and composer Carl Lorens (1851–1909), who wrote many popular Viennese songs and who lived in Meidling for many years.
