The listed Isis Fountain ( list entry ) on Albertplatz in the Breitenfeld district of Vienna's 8th district , Josefstadt , is the only cast iron fountain in the city.

history

The well cast in the Graf Salm'schen Eisenfabrik in Blansko near Brno was created on the initiative of the chief judge Carl Georg Gaber. The fountain was put into operation in autumn 1833 and consecrated in March 1834, after the Isis statue was installed, by Sigismund Schultes , abbot of the Schottenstift , which was the landlord until 1848, in the presence of Emperor Franz I. The statue of the goddess Isis was modeled on a marble statue in the antiquities collection of the imperial family .

Originally the Isisbrunnen water from the donated Hütteldorf coming Albertine water line . However, since the productivity of the springs decreased, it was later connected to the Emperor Ferdinand's aqueduct .

The painter Carl Wenzel Zajicek, born in Vienna, handed down a view of Albertplatz with the Isis fountain in the form of a watercolor .

The fountain originally stood exactly in the middle of the square. In 1912 it was moved to the northeast side of the square, as space was needed for a new tram line. From 1912 to 1942, line 15 branched off at the Florianigasse / Albertgasse junction (which it otherwise followed), through Albertgasse, via Albertplatz and through Hebragasse and Lazarettgasse to Spitalgasse, where the junction returns to the line 5 merged.
