Hugo Franz Altgraf zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Raitz (born April 1, 1776 in Vienna ; † March 31, 1836 there ) was an industrialist and natural scientist.

He belongs to the Salm-Reifferscheidt- Raitz branch line of the Salm family . His grandfather Anton zu Salm-Reifferscheidt (1720–1769) had acquired the lords of Blansko and Raitz in 1763/66 . His parents were Carl zu Salm-Reifferscheidt (1750–1838, from 1790 the 1st Prince and Former Count and Imperial Count) and his wife Princess Pauline von Auersperg (1752–1791), daughter of Prince Karl Josef Anton von Auersperg (1720–1800) .

Life

He studied law at the University of Vienna and was also interested in chemistry , mining and metallurgy . Salm-Reifferscheidt and his friends Wenzel Graf Paar and Wilhelm Friedrich von Meyern dealt with the idea of ​​general armament and took part in the Italian campaign on the Austrian side . After 1797 he dealt with mesmerism , the production of indigo and beet sugar . Salm-Reifferscheidt introduced the cowpox vaccination in Austria and Moravia . In 1801 he made a study trip to England and studied production improvements and new technological processes for handicrafts and industry.

He managed the family estates in Blansko , Raitz , Stiepanau and Lasinow . Other businesses owned by the Salm-Reiffscheidt family were the Raitz beet sugar factory, the Raitz beer brewery, and the Doubrawitz instrument and machine factory . Johann Arzberger (1778–1835) and Karl von Reichenbach (1788–1869) were active in Salm-Reifferscheidt's works.

He married Marie Josephe McCaffry of Kean More (* March 21, 1775, † April 24, 1836) daughter of Count Robert McCaffry of Kean More and his wife Marie Anna Freiin von Blümegen in Arnau in 1802 . The couple had several children including:

Library

Hugo Franz Altgraf zu Salm-Reifferscheidt expanded the castle library in Raitz, which his father Karl Joseph had set up. Above all, alchemical literature from the library of the Counts of Küenburg in Tobitschau from the 16th century allowed the library to grow to around 20,000 volumes. Franz Altgraf zu Salm-Reifferscheidt was also a co-founder of the Moravian State Museum .
