Mikura-jima ( Japanese 御 蔵 島 ) is a volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean . Geographically, it belongs to the archipelago of the Izu Islands and, like the entire archipelago, administratively belongs to the Japanese prefecture of Tokyo .
geography
Mikura-jima is located about 200 km south of Tokyo and 22 km south of the neighboring island of Miyake-jima , with which it forms the sub-prefecture of Miyake ( 三 宅 支 庁 , Miyake-shichō ). The almost round island has a diameter of almost 6 km and an area of 20.51 km². The whole island is formed by the up to 851 m high stratovolcano Oyama ( 御 山 , sometimes misread as Miyama), the last eruption of which was about 6000 years ago.
The 338 inhabitants (as of October 1, 2019) live in the village of Mikurajima ( 御 蔵 島村 , -mura ), which covers the entire island; the population density is 16 people / km².
