Description and characteristics

Columbusplatz against Favoritenstrasse

Columbusplatz is located in the oldest part of Favoriten between Laxenburger Strasse and Favoritenstrasse (until 1903 Himberger Strasse). It was originally a market square, from which the planned construction of the Favoritens started. Since 2005 it has been part of the Favoritenstrasse pedestrian zone, just as lively as it, with a few bars and the Columbuscenter shopping center . On the square, designed by the architect Luigi Blau , there are relaxation areas with benches and fountains as well as sparse greenery, and under the square there is an underground car park with access from Laxenburger Straße.

Before the subway construction began here in 1971, tram lines O and 66 (both south of the square in Laxenburger Strasse) and 67 (Favoritenstrasse) ran via Columbusplatz. Between Südtiroler Platz and Columbusplatz, all three lines went south on Laxenburger Strasse and north on Favoritenstrasse. On the square, the appropriate road was changed to continue driving. Sets coming from the city center could also turn towards the city center on the square. As the last remaining line after the opening of the U1 in 1978, the O-Wagen used these track connections until 2003, when work on clearing the square for traffic began. Since 2003, the O track has also been located north of the square for northbound travel on Laxenburger Strasse, where there is still a stop at Columbusplatz.

Towards the south, in the middle of the square between Laxenburger Straße and Favoritenstraße, the narrow Columbusgasse branches off, which runs parallel to Laxenburger Straße to Troststraße and has 14 blocks.

Columbushof

Probably the most remarkable historicist house in the district from the 2nd half of the 19th century is Columbushof at number 6. It was built in 1892 by the architects Josef and Anton Drexler and extensively renovated in 1983. The representative late historical apartment building (= house with rental apartments) shows unusually rich decor. The top floor, under the roof, is decorated with facade paintings showing Bacchus and a figure in medieval costume. In the middle of the building there are relief medallions depicting Columbus and the English navigator Francis Drake . There is also a client's monogram, baroque balcony grilles and a wrought iron gate on the facade. The entrance is flanked by atlases.
