Josef Drexler
Josef Drexler (born February 8, 1850 in Vienna ; † June 1, 1922 there ) was an Austrian architect and city architect.
Life
Josef Drexler studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Theophil von Hansen . In 1873 he worked for the architecture office Claus & Gross before he founded his own company in the same year. The success was likely to have been rather small at first, as Drexler was also employed in the Vienna City Building Office from 1878 to 1885. After a private stroke of fate in which his wife died, he suffered a nervous breakdown and had to spend some time in a mental hospital. That is why his brother Anton Drexler joined the company, which has since developed extremely successful construction activities in Austria, as well as in Bohemia and Moravia, under the name of the Drexler brothers. Drexler received the master builder license in 1892, and in 1898 the Golden Cross of Merit with the crown. Due to disagreements, the company was dissolved in 1912. This ended Josef Drexler's career, of which no further buildings are known after this point in time.
meaning
Together with his brother, Josef Drexler was one of the most productive and therefore more important architects in Vienna at the turn of the century. The main focus of their work was residential building, but they also built various public buildings. Initially committed to historicism with neo-baroque decor, secessionist forms appeared around 1910 , occasionally also the Heimat style .
