The Rudolf von Alt-space located on the 3rd Vienna district highway . It was laid out in 1905 instead of a factory site and named after the painter and watercolorist Rudolf von Alt .
It was built in a uniform style between 1906 and 1911 and thus forms a late historical building ensemble. It is oriented towards Paracelsusgasse, which was built around the same time and over which it has a visual axis towards the Danube Canal . Via Paracelsusgasse there is also a seamless transition to the late historical ensemble, which was built a little later (after 1910), in Untere Weißgerberstraße and on Weißgerberlände . In addition, on the opposite side is the Palais des Beaux Arts , which sets a clear accent. Towards Löwengasse it forms a bulge- like bulge, an effect that is enhanced by the protrusion of houses No. 3 and 5.
The architecture corresponds to the last phase of late historicism and is already provided with secessionist decorative elements, or even inspired by homeland security architecture. The fronts are characterized by bay structures, gables and rich roof sections. Overall, however, the facade design takes a back seat to the building structure and the spatial conception of the square, which is strictly symmetrical despite the different facades. For the authors of the art topography, this is an important example of the urban planning concepts of late historicism, which in some respects anticipated the communal buildings of the interwar period.
