The Siebenbrunnen in Vienna

The Siebenbrunnen is a fountain on Siebenbrunnenplatz in the 5th Viennese district Margareten .

history

The fountain at the beginning of the 20th century

In 1562 the first water supply to the Hofburg was built by order of King Ferdinand I. The water for the Siebenbrunner Hofwasserleitung was collected in seven wells at Siebenbrunnenfeld in Oberreinprechtsdorf (today a district of Margareten) and conducted in cast iron pipes to a reservoir under the Augustinerbastei in Vienna, from where it was in turn forwarded to the Hofburg.

In 1904, the Siebenbrunnen, created by the sculptor Richard Kauffungen , was unveiled in memory of the Hofwasserleitung, the incorporation of the former suburbs into the 5th district and on the occasion of the 60th birthday of the Viennese Mayor Karl Lueger . In addition, the Siebenbrunnenfeldgasse, Siebenbrunnengasse and Siebenbrunnenplatz were named in the area of the former Siebenbrunnenfeld.

In 1999 Siebenbrunnenplatz was converted into a traffic-calmed zone (pedestrian zone).

The figure of Vindobona is enthroned above it, the base of which is inscribed with dedication and a relief portrait of Karl Lueger in the center. The inscriptions read: “In memory of the seven wells that existed here before time” and “Erected on the occasion of the 60th year of the meritorious mayor Dr. Karl Lueger ” .
