Heinrich Jasomirgott Fountain

The Heinrich-Jasomirgott-Brunnen or Heinrichsbrunnen is a fountain in the Schottenstift in Vienna's 1st district of the Inner City . As part of the entire Schottenstift complex, it is under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

The Heinrich Jasomirgott fountain in the Great Schottenhof of the Schottenstift on the Freyung was donated by the abbot of the monastery, Peter Heister, and created by the sculptor Johann Sebastian Wagner in 1652. The fountain was restored in 1770 under Abbot Benno Pointner . Since the portrayal of Duke Heinrich II. Jasomirgott to Duke Leopold III. is very similar, it was sometimes called the Leopoldsbrunnen.

The reason for the foundation was the development of a spring in the area of the Sankt Ulrich parish church in Vienna's 7th district of Neubau , whose water was channeled through the Schottenfelder Hofwasserleitung into the Neue Burg . Part of this drinking water was also used by the Schottenstift by extending the pipeline.

description

In an octagonal stone basin with curved edges there is an articulated column, which carries a round fountain bowl with a further pedestal . This pedestal has four fishes as gargoyles , which at the same time carry the stone figure of Duke Heinrich II Jasomirgott. The water flows from the fountain bowl through the mouth openings of four lion heads into the large fountain basin.

He is dressed in armor that is partially covered by his coat. In his right hand he carries a metal model of the church of the Schottenstift, while his left hand is supported by a coat of arms.

Originally, the stone figure was either partially or fully gilded.
