Benno Pointner (born September 22, 1722 in Rafing ; † February 15, 1807 in Vienna ) was abbot of the Schottenstift in Vienna.

biography

Benno Pointner joined the Schottenstift in 1740, where he was ordained in 1745. After the death of Abbot Robert Stadler , he was elected his successor on March 27, 1765.

In addition to the secularization of the Schottenstift during the Josephine reforms , he was also able to prevent the closure of the Pulkauer Bründl , to which he was connected through his nearby place of birth, Rafing. Emperor Joseph II confirmed all monastery privileges in 1782 , with the exception of the right of asylum , which was not in line with the reforms.

Despite the large debts that the Order had accumulated before taking office, numerous new buildings and other activities were built under his leadership:

  • Gumpendorfer parish church in Vienna-Mariahilf (1765)
  • Schottenfeld Church in Vienna-Neubau (1784–1786)
  • Priory house at the Schottenstift on the Freyung (1773–1774)
  • Restoration of the altars in the Schottenkirche
  • Extension of the Schottenhof by a wing (1792–1794)
  • Acquisition of the Kohlhof in Vienna-Ottakring for the monastery

With the release of a field belonging to the monastery between Hernals and Lerchenfeld for building in 1801, he enabled the suburb of Breitenfeld to be founded in 1802 . To commemorate this event, Bennogasse and Bennoplatz , on which the Breitenfeld parish church was originally to be built, were named after him in 1862 .

Benno Pointner gained importance for the Benedictine order through a new definition of the rules of the order and that he made it possible for the members of the order to attend university.
