The Schottenfeld Church , the parish church of St. Laurenz am Schottenfeld , is a Roman Catholic church in the 7th district of Vienna , Neubau , on Westbahnstrasse, corner of Zieglergasse, in the district of Schottenfeld .

architecture

The baroque-classical hall church with a tower facade was built by order of the Schottenstift as landlord under Abbot Benno Pointner from 1784 to 1787 according to the plans of the builder Andreas Zach in the suburb of Schottenfeld, in 1786 on St. Laurentius and at the same time elevated to the parish church. The facade tower was finished in 1787. The church is incorporated into the Schottenstift, but has been looked after by the Teutonic Order since 1946 .

The tower facade shows a large Ionic structure of pilasters above a high base. The two-bay, square-vaulted nave is extended like a transept in the second bay. The two-bay choir with a rounded end has oratorios built in like a bay on both sides. There is an organ loft above a vaulted porch. The ceiling paintings from 1769 to 1771 are by Leopold Schulz, Ignaz Schönbrunner and Anton Roux. The picture “ Last Judgment ” over rich pseudo-architecture is by Friedrich Staudinger . The stained glass windows Jonas and Marienkrönung were created by the Geyling company in 1905.

Furnishing

The high altar was created by Benedikt Henrici from 1784 to 1786 based on a design by Johann Baptist Hagenauer . On the cafeteria and the pillared pedestals are lead reliefs Martyrs of the Apostles Peter and Paul and the Entombment of Christ by Johann Ferdinand Prokop. The original altarpiece, Apotheosis of St. Laurentius von Peter Strudel was commissioned by Pastor Urban Loritz in 1852 by the painter Carl Hemerlein with a depiction of St. Laurentius painted over.

The organ, which now has 26 registers on two manuals and a pedal , was originally a work by Franz Xaver Krismann from 1788. In 1825 Jacob Deutschmann rebuilt it . In the period that followed, the organ was changed in the most liberal way several times. In 1966, the organ builder Philipp Eppel carried out extensive reconstruction using the historic case . The original gaming table has been missing since 1962.
