The collegiate church "Zum heiligen Kreuz " is located at Mariahilfer Strasse 24 in Vienna's 7th district of Neubau , is part of the collegiate barracks and, since 1921, the Roman Catholic garrison church of Vienna .

The north-northwest facing church with south tower is a listed building .

history

The collegiate church was probably built in 1739 according to plans by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach . Under Maria Theresia was church building expanded. In 1772, Benedikt Henrici built today's tower with its late baroque helmet . The church served as a military depot between 1785 and 1799 and was consecrated again in 1799.

The altar painting “God the Father in the Clouds” is by Hubert Maurer , above it is the oil painting “Jesus on the Cross” by Johann Michael Heß from the year 1799. The side altars are provided with pictures by Vinzenz Fischer. In the area of ​​the church entrance there are numerous memorial plaques for fallen soldiers (including for Austrian soldiers who died in UN operations - the one for the executed Nazi Colonel General and war criminal Alexander Löhr was removed in February 2015).

The organ of the collegiate church comes from the Viennese organ builder Franz Ullmann and has eight stops on a manual and pedal.
