Mammillaria melanocentra is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet melanocentra means '(Latin melanocentrus) with a black central spine'.
description
Mammillaria melanocentra grows solitary with the body depressed. The spherical, glaucous- green shoots are up to 16 centimeters high and 10 to 12 centimeters in diameter. The large warts are firm, pyramidal, square, keeled and contain plenty of milky sap . The axillae are first covered with wool, then later naked. A strong, sub-like black central spine is present. The 4 to 13 radial spines are strong but also unequal. The younger ones are white to black, in old age light gray. They grow to a length of 0.6 to 2.2 inches, with the lowest ones being the longest.
The flowers are whitish, bright deep pink or bright carmine red. They are up to 2 inches long and large in diameter. The fruits are club-shaped, pink to scarlet and 3 centimeters long. They contain brown seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria melanocentra is common in the Mexican states of Coahuila , Durango , Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas .
It was first described in 1855 by Heinrich Poselger .
Synonyms are Mammillaria euthele Backeb. (1961, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 29.1, 36.1), Mammillaria linaresensis R.Wolf & F.Wolf (1990), Neomammillaria runyonii Britton & Rose (1923), Mammillaria runyonii (Britton & Rose) Boed. (1933) and Mammillaria rubrograndis Repp. & ABLau ex Repp. (1979).

It was first described in 1990 as Mammillaria linaresensis by Franziska and Richard Wolf. David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria melanocentra . The subspecies has 4 to 6 radial spines and whitish flowers. -
Mammillaria melanocentra subsp. melanocentra :
The nominate form has 7 to 9 black radial spines and bright, deep pink flowers. -
Mammillaria melanocentra subsp. rubrograndis (Repp. & ABLau ex Repp.) DRHunt :
The first description was in 1979 as Mammillaria rubrograndis by Werner Reppenhagen . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria melanocentra . The subspecies has 11 to 13 yellowish brown radial spines. The flowers are bright carmine red.
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
