Werner Reppenhagen

Werner Reppenhagen (born October 24, 1911 in Hamburg ; † November 12, 1996 in Sankt Veit an der Glan ) was a German horticulturist and cactus specialist who did great work in researching the cactus genus Mammillaria . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Repp. ".

Live and act

Werner Reppenhagen founded his own gardening business in Sankt Veit an der Glan in Carinthia after his gardening apprenticeship and several years of traveling . He was interested in cacti from an early age and there he wanted to start a scientific work on cacti. But then the Second World War intervened and he was forced to switch to growing vegetables. He was also drafted into the Air Force.

After the war he was able to rebuild his nursery. From 1959 he went on research trips to Mexico , where he examined the habitats of mammillaries in particular and exchanged experiences with the local cactus experts. In the following years he made a total of 26 research trips, mainly to Mexico. The highlight of his work was his extensive work on the mammillaries The genus Mammillaria , which was published in two volumes in 1991 and 1992. He continued to work on improving his work until his death in 1996.
