Oskar Thiede
Oskar Thiede (born February 13, 1879 in Vienna ; † November 22, 1961 there ) was an Austrian sculptor and medalist .
Life
Oskar Thiede studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts and later at the Academy of Fine Arts with Edmund Hellmer , Hans Bitterlich and Stefan Schwartz . Together with artist colleagues such as Ferdinand Andri , Siegmund L'Allemand , Alfred Roller , Christian Griepenkerl and others, he was a member of the German-national association of German art academics Athenaia , a corporation at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
From 1912 he worked as a freelance artist. In 1915 he became a member of the Künstlerhaus , which he also headed as Vice President from 1933. After several study visits abroad, he became a medalist in the art group (joined on November 19, 1915) of the Austro-Hungarian war press headquarters during the First World War . From this period there are 40 plaques and medals in the holdings of the Vienna Army History Museum .
After the First World War, Thiede taught at the technical school for chiselling, was appointed chairman of the chair for architectural sculpture at the Technical University and in 1932 appointed professor. His membership in the NSDAP is documented and the fact that in 1934 he was at least in closer contact with the illegal employees of the NSDAP is undisputed. In 1956 he became an honorary member of the Moldavia Vienna fraternity .
His objects can be found in many public places, buildings and residential complexes in Vienna and Eisenstadt , as well as on power plants. In addition, he created a large number of portrait busts, small sculptures and medals.
He has received a variety of awards and prizes. Among other things, he received the silver medal for Austria in 1948, the last time there were competitions for artists at the Olympic Games in London .
He had his studios in Mariahilf and Mauer , and is honored in the relevant district museums.
He died at the age of 82 and was buried in the Mauer cemetery (group 32, row 2, grave number 3) in the family grave of his wife Alice Thiede (née Göhring).
