Siegmund L'Allemand (born March 8, 1840 in Vienna ; † December 24, 1910 ibid) was an Austrian painter of history , battles , genre and portraits .

Life

Siegmund L'Allemand, son of the engraver Thaddäus L'Allemand and a nephew of Fritz L'Allemand , was enthusiastic about painting at an early age and received his first lessons from his uncle, subsequently at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Christian Ruben and Karl von Blaas . He was mainly active as a history and battle painter.

From 1864 he was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus , in 1864 and 1866 he took part as a war painter in the Austrian campaigns in the German-Danish War and in the Third Italian War of Independence .

L'Allemand taught from 1883 as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He was a member of the examination committee that refused Adolf Hitler's admission to the Academy as an art student in October 1907 . He was a member of the Academic Association of German Art Academics Athenaia.

Siegmund L'Allemand received several awards for his work, including in 1867 at the Paris World Exhibition , in 1876 with the Reichel Prize and in 1879 with the Karl Ludwig Medal. He also completed unfinished paintings by his uncle Fritz L'Allemand.

His grave is located in the Simmering evangelical cemetery .

Many of his works are now exhibited in the Vienna Army History Museum , including the monumental portrait of the Austrian general Gideon Ernst von Laudon , riding across the battlefield near Kunersdorf . L'Allemand first made the painting for the Paris World Exhibition in 1878 , and only then was it shown in the Army History Museum.
