Fritz L'Allemand (born May 24, 1812 in Hanau , † September 20, 1866 in Vienna ) was an Austrian history painter .

origin

He comes from a family of artists. His grandfather Konrad Marcus Christian L'Allemand was an engraver like his father. His parents were Siegmund Wilhelm Christoph L'Allemand (1774–1856) and his wife Klara Anna Maria Gesser (1788–1855). His brother Konrad (1809–1880) was a medalist in Frankfurt am Main and Hanover, his other brother Thaddäus (1810–1872) was also an engraver in Vienna.

Fritz moved with these parents to Vienna in 1826, where he went to school. From 1827 he studied at the Vienna Academy under Josef Klieber and Joseph von Führich . He was also sponsored by Johann Peter Krafft . In 1835 he made his first public as an artist in appearance until 1838 he painted in the studio from Friedrich Schilcher .

From portrait and genre painting he subsequently turned to historical depictions of war. He found motifs from the Austrian campaigns in the coalition wars of 1809, the revolution of 1849 in northern Italy and the German-Danish War of 1864. He also worked as an illustrator for military costume works. In spite of his true nature, he knew how to interpret the material artistically and design it skillfully. His battle pictures found a special patron in the then Emperor Franz Joseph I.

His nephew Siegmund L'Allemand (1840–1910) was also a well-known painter, whom he taught in his youth. From 1848 he was an academic member of the Vienna Academy, from 1861 a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus . Fritz L'Allemand died on September 20, 1866 in Vienna and was buried in the Matzleinsdorf evangelical cemetery .

Some of his works are now in the Vienna Army History Museum .

family
