from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Conrad L'Allemand (born April 22, 1809 in Hanau , † October 15, 1880 in Hanover ) was a portrait painter from Hesse .

Life

Conrad L'Allemand was the grandson of the Frankfurt medalist Conrad Christian L'Allemand (1752-1830). L'Allemand was trained together with his three brothers at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . His works can be traced back to his three major stages in life: from 1830 to 1838 he worked in Frankfurt am Main and created portraits of the urban bourgeoisie there. From 1838 he went to Hanover, where he found access to the court society of the Kingdom of Hanover through a recommendation from a relative of the physician Georg Philipp Holscher and portrayed them in portraits. Due to the close ties between Hanover and the English court in London, his portraits also include British personalities of the time. From Hanover he also worked temporarily in Berlin . Accordingly, the Historical Museum on the Hohe Ufer has several works by L'Allemand. His estate is kept by the Lower Saxony State Gallery . His catalog raisonné, begun in 1830, shows no fewer than 2138 portraits by 1878.

L'Allemand was honored by the sovereign of the Kingdom of Hanover with the award of the Golden Medal of Honor for Art and Science .
