The Widow-von-Sarepta-Brunnen is a fountain in Vienna's 1st  district of Inner City .

history

The fountain in the courtyard of the former Savoy women's monastery (also known as the Palais Savoyen-Carignan ) was built between 1769 and 1770. The wall painting above the fountain was added in 1900. In 1987 the female figure was moved to the Liechtenstein City Palace and a copy was made for the fountain. The palace of the former women's monastery is also owned by the Princely Family of Liechtenstein .

layout

In the niche of the wall fountain there is a group of figures created by Franz Xaver Messerschmidt and Johann Martin Fischer (the copy of the "widow" was cast by Alfred Zöttl in 1987). The female figure holds a water-spouting jug, while two boys hold or bring further vessels at her feet. The fountain is flanked on both sides by lion figures resting on plinths, which also come from Messerschmidt and Fischer. Above the fountain is the inscription "Eliseus makes a widow rich in Öhl IV B K C IV" , a reference to the biblical widow of Sarepta in the 1st Book of Kings of the Old Testament . The prophet Elijah can be seen on a small relief above the inscription .
