Wilhelm Bubeck

Wilhelm Bubeck (born July 10, 1850 in Basel , † June 14, 1891 in Münchenstein ) was a Swiss architect .

Live and act

Bubeck completed an apprenticeship as an architect at the Polytechnic in Stuttgart from 1868 to 1872. After graduating, he was involved in the construction of the Gotthard Railway and the architect responsible for the Gotthard Railway's structural engineering projects. This was followed by a job with the royal building officer Edwin Oppler (1831-1880) in Hanover . Bubeck traveled to Europe and worked, among other things, on the construction of the great Palace of Justice in Brussels .

After his return to Basel he became head of the drawing and modeling school in Basel. On November 9, 1880, he was appointed director of the Basel Trade Museum . In 1886 the modeling school was converted under the leadership of Bubeck as the general trade school in Basel , where he was director until his tragic accidental death in 1891.

He made numerous drafts, sketches and drawings that later shape the cityscape of Basel, among other things, drinking water fountains were created based on his designs, which were then poured into their blast furnaces by Ludwig von Roll'schen Eisenwerke . Of the original 50 fountain specimens that were made according to Bubeck's design, 28 are still in the city of Basel today.

On June 14th, 1891 Wilhelm Bubeck died together with his brother PJ Bubeck-Degen and his son, as well as Bubeck's sister Johanna in the railway accident at Münchenstein . The disaster at the railway bridge over the Birs claimed more than 70 lives.
