The Basel School of Design (SfG Basel) is a competence center for professional training in design and artistic professions. It offers preliminary, basic and advanced training in full-time or part-time courses for creative activities on the job market.
Using new technical possibilities and referring to modern design trends, the training at the SfG aims to promote both intellectual and manual skills. The basic concept of the school - where teachers from the fields of design, art and science teach - therefore includes the connection of theory with application-oriented knowledge and professional practice.
history
The drawing and modeling school for young craftsmen, founded in 1796, was accepted into the general trade school founded by the canton in 1887 as an arts and crafts department, in which more and more design and artistic training programs were carried out. The trade museum , which became independent in 1961, was connected to it.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the development of the Kunstgewerbeschule , as it was called at the time, was shaped by several influential teachers: Emil Ruder , typographer and director founded the book printing class, Armin Hofmann , head of the graphics class, founded the advanced training class for graphics and Wolfgang Weingart , typographer, expanded the typography department.
In 1980 the arts and crafts department of the general trade school was given the current name School for Design .
In 1999 the University of Applied Sciences was founded, into which some of the above-mentioned courses were integrated and restructured according to European requirements.
The school for design kept the preliminary courses, the offers of basic and advanced training and is now a vocational school at upper secondary level . It is now independent and is still housed in the buildings built by Hermann Baur in 1961 on Vogelsangstrasse. Until 2017, the school had its own exhibition rooms, a public library for design and a poster collection for its projects in the premises of the former industrial museum in Spalenvorstadt 2 . Since summer 2017 these satellites can be found at Freilager-Platz on the Dreispitz-Areal ,
