The focus of the collecting activity today is on Swiss posters with local, content and design relationships with north-western Switzerland . In 2019 the collection comprised around 90,000 posters.

history

The beginnings of the poster collection go back to 1896. After a successful exhibition with posters from the holdings of the Kunstgewerbemuseum Strassburg in the Gewerbemuseum Basel , which is affiliated with the General Trade School , work began on building up its own collection. In 1905 this had grown to around 600 posters. In 1916 the art historian commissioned Hermann Kienzle , the new director of the school, Max Bucherer to the "establishment of a pattern and an exemplary collection of applied graphics."

The move of the trade school together with its important arts and crafts department, later the school for design , from the shared building on the corner of Petersgraben-Spalenvorstadt in 1961 marked a major turning point in the history of the trade museum and thus also of the poster collection had previously been heavily focused on teaching at school, lost a large part of her motivation. In 1986, the separation of the trade school and the trade museum was also implemented on a legal level. After the museum had to close in 1996, the poster collection was organizationally integrated into the School of Design, but initially remained in its original location. The move to the Dreispitz area took place in 2018 .
