Castel Rinaldi is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of the Italian municipality of Massa Martana in the province of Perugia in Umbria .

geography

The place is about 2.5 km northwest of the main town Massa Martana and about 38 km southeast of the provincial and regional capital Perugia . The place is at 415  m slm and had about 30 inhabitants in 2001. In 2011 there were 34 residents.

history

The place was probably built around 1160 or 1161 by Rinaldo da Calabria and was only fortified in the 14th or 15th century. In 1290 the place belonged to Todi and was inhabited by 37 families. Around 1310 or 1311 the site escaped a siege by the Ghibellines of Todi when the site decided to submit to Todi. In the 15th century the place fell to the Guelfi family of the Atti from Todi.

Attractions

  • San Sebastiano , church in the center, which was rebuilt in the late 12th or early 13th century and was first mentioned in 1277 as San Sebastiani de Castro Raynal. The church was expanded in the 18th century, the facade of the church was relocated to the former church side. In 1732 the church was consecrated again by Ludovico Anselmo Gualtieri, Bishop of Todi. The church was damaged in the 1997 earthquake and then restored. Contains on the altar the canvas painting San Sebastiano e I Santi Carlo Borromeo, Sebastiano, Vincenzo e Francesco created by Andrea Polidori in 1630 .

  • Chiesa della Visitazione di Maria , church of the castle, which was built in 1794.
  • Necropoli pagana , necropolis just outside Castel Rinaldi, dating back to the 2nd century BC BC to the 3rd century .
