Exhibition room of the museum in the Palais Rohan

The Musée des Arts décoratifs (Museum of Decorative Arts; Museum of Decorative Arts) of the city of Strasbourg is located on the ground floor of the Palais Rohan , the former city palace of the Prince-Bishops from the House of Rohan . One half of the museum is made up of the magnificent rooms in the late Baroque , Rococo and Empire styles , the other half offers a broad overview of the porcelain, gold and silversmiths of Alsatian masters between 1681 and 1870.

The collection

After the palace was severely damaged by British and American bombings on August 11, 1944, the apartments of the prince-bishops were gradually restored to their original state and the interior furnishings were restored until the 1990s. The rooms have the traditional furnishings of courtly showrooms ( tapestries , chinoiserie , wood carvings, wall paintings, stucco decorations , trompe-l'oeils , etc.) to a high degree of craftsmanship.

The focus of the rest of the collection is on the sometimes remarkably exuberant porcelain products of the Strasbourg manufactory of the brothers Paul and Johann Hannong , the founders and directors of the widely famous Frankenthal porcelain manufacture , as well as the silversmiths of the Strasbourg master families Imlin and Kirstein.

Hahn ( Coq automate )

In the salle d'horlogerie (n ° 14) there are also parts of the first astronomical clock of the Strasbourg cathedral (built around 1350), including the larger than life cock ( Coq automate ), which is considered to be the oldest preserved automaton in the world.
