Exhibition concept

In a large historical ensemble of town houses grouped around an inner courtyard, the museum shows the mutual influences of the German and French cultural areas on Alsace. The museum's information flyer emphasizes that an Alsatian born in 1869 and died in 1945 changed nationality five times in his life. The common clichés about the Alsatians are also mentioned. Most of the exhibits date from the 18th and 19th centuries. With the establishment of the museum, the explicitly Alsatian cultural heritage was to be preserved, because it was feared that regions such as Alsace would in the future be completely integrated into the nation states and lose their peculiarities. The focus is on the everyday life of Alsatians with their everyday objects. The focus of the exhibition is on the architecture of town houses, their furnishings (including wedding chests), household items, clothing (including traditional costumes) and objects for practicing various religions (including a collection of votive tablets and a Jewish oratory). Above all, the ceramic collections with their information on earlier ceramic production in Alsace (with the focus on the Soufflenheim and Betschdorf sites that are still in existence today ) are of particular importance. The director of the museum is Elisabeth Shimells.
