Lange Erlen Zoo
The zoo in the Langen Erlen is located in Basel's urban area and extends over an area of around 20 hectares in the Lange Erlen riverside forest on the southern bank of the Wiese River . The zoo and its sponsoring association Erlen-Verein was founded in 1871 by people from Basel who took the initiative. The park has a tree population of approx. 450 trees - from the red beech to the sequoia tree . The zoo is freely accessible during the daytime.
The zoo specializes in the keeping of local animals and is a valuable addition to the Basel Zolli .
Animal species in the zoo
Wildlife
In addition to bison , red deer , fallow deer and chamois , the indigenous predators Eurasian lynx , European wildcat and red fox can be observed in the park . A variety of water birds can be found in the park's ponds. Other birds (such as various owls, pheasants, partridges and songbirds) as well as reptiles and amphibians can be discovered in aviaries and terrariums.
A group of capuchin monkeys is also kept in the zoo.
Livestock breeds
Particularly noteworthy are shown under the domestic breeds the rare livestock breeds Appenzeller pointed hood chicken , Grisons rays goat , Diepholzer goose , Fehkanninchen , Swiss chicken , Valais country sheep and woolly pig .
