Origin and development

The origin of the Swiss chicken goes back to 1905. In Amriswil , Alfred Weiss began to breed a typical dual-purpose chicken from various breeds, but mainly from white Orpington and Wyandotten chickens. In 1910 the first club was founded and a breed standard was set up. Until the Second World War, the association enjoyed a steady increase in membership. After the war, with the onset of industrialization of agriculture, self-sufficient agriculture quickly lost its importance - and with it the Swiss fowl. In 1971 the association only had six members. Since 1991 ProSpecieRara has been continuing the Swiss chicken project with the few remaining breeding lines. In cooperation with dedicated breeders, this traditional breed was saved from extinction.

The population development is stable today.
