Josef Trattner (born March 13, 1955 in Semriach ) is an Austrian artist. He was best known for his work with foam as a material.

life and work

Josef Trattner graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he also taught from 1996 to 2008. Trattner is active in various art disciplines: his work includes sculptures, performances, actions, photography, videos and literature.

Since 1990 Trattner has been using foam as a material for projects in public spaces. The furnishing of the courtyard of the Vienna MuseumsQuartier (MQ) also goes back to a foam performance by Josef Trattner : In the summer of 2002, Trattner designed huge foam cubes for the area in the Vienna MuseumsQuartier, which were enthusiastically used by visitors as part of a temporary installation. The management of the MuseumsQuartier Errichtungs- und Betriebsgesellschaft (MQ E + B) then invited people to come up with ideas for permanent seating furniture for the MQ courtyards. The winner was the team of architects PPAG with their “ Enzi ” courtyard furniture .

Josef Trattner has been artistically exploring the colors of wine since 2000 . After an exhibition with 100 wine pictures in the Vienna Künstlerhaus in 2005, further exhibitions and performances with wine artifacts followed in Austria, Switzerland and Piedmont, Italy. At the 8th Shanghai Biennale from October 23, 2010 to January 23, 2011 Trattner was represented as the Austrian representative with 100 wine pictures.

Since 2004 Josef Trattner has dedicated himself to his “European sofa rides”. An essential feature of Trattner's work is the superimposition of aspects inherent in art (including the relationship between materiality, shape and color to the interior and exterior) with social issues. His ephemeral stagings in natural and urban spaces that dissolve again after changes by the audience and weather influences are always also social experimental arrangements that have a self-reflective and critical potential.

Trattner implemented a number of artistic projects in collaboration with other art disciplines. There were collaborations with musicians, writers, architects and photographers.

Josef Trattner lives and works in Vienna. He is a member of the Vienna Secession .
