Enzis in the inner courtyard of the MuseumsQuartier (2006)

From 2002 to 2010, the Enzi furniture was part of the furnishing of the inner courtyard in the MuseumsQuartier (MQ) in Vienna , a so-called courtyard furniture. It was designed by the architects Anna Popelka and Georg Poduschka. The name refers to Daniela Enzi, who was the authorized signatory of the MuseumsQuartier until 2012. Since 2010, the courtyard furniture in the MuseumsQuartier (MQ) Vienna has been supplemented by the "Enzo" (2010 to 2013) and "Viena" models (in use since 2013).

Origin of the Enzis

Installation by the artist Josef Trattner in the courtyard of the MuseumsQuartier, 2002

The furnishing of the courtyard of the Vienna MuseumsQuartier originally goes back to a foam performance by the Viennese artist Josef Trattner : In the summer of 2002 Trattner designed large foam cubes for the area in the MuseumsQuartier, which were enthusiastically used by visitors as part of a temporary installation. The management of the MuseumsQuartier Errichtungs- und Betriebsgesellschaft (MQ E + B) then invited people to come up with ideas for permanent seating furniture for the MQ courtyards. The winner was the team of architects PPAG with their “Enzi” courtyard furniture.

From November 2002, the “Winter in the MQ” program, designed by MQ E + B, took place for the first time. For this occasion, the “Enzis” courtyard furniture in the form of “Igloos” moved into the MQ for the first time. From May 1, 2003, the “Summer in the MQ” program, designed by MQ E + B, took place for the first time. The first Enzis made available for lying down were in the color of swimming pool blue.

Enzos

Enzos in front of the MuseumsQuartier

On November 11th, 2009, Enzis, which had been put together to form an ice palace in the courtyard of the Vienna MuseumsQuartier, burned down. A short circuit was blamed for the fire. After this fire, new Enzis were made, but at the same time this event was used as an opportunity to revise the usual shape of the Enzis. This task was taken over by the designer duo Ludwig Slezak and Margarita Navarro in collaboration with the Enzi developers PPAG.

The furniture called Enzos is hollow, made of a more fire-resistant plastic and should no longer be colored annually. A mix of colors should result from the fact that every year those Enzos with the worst signs of wear and tear are taken out of service and replaced with new ones of different colors.

At the beginning of August 2010 the first Enzos (around 60 pieces) were delivered at a unit price of around 1500 euros. The new name Enzo should refer to the country of manufacture, Italy.

The Enzos were in use until 2012.

Vienas

With the Vienas, the MQ courtyard furniture series was further developed and continued in 2013. The design comes again from the team of architects PPAG Möbel, who have combined elements from Enzis and Enzos in the “Viena”. The shape was adopted from the Enzi, but the dimensions were changed. Material and production processes have been taken over from the Enzo in an improved manner. The Vienas are made of polyethylene and are 100 percent recyclable. In the middle of the seat there is a hole through which rainwater can drain or in which the rod of a parasol can be fixed.

Choice of colors

The color of the Enzis and Enzos in Vienna's MuseumsQuartier was determined annually until 2010´. Since then, the color has been changed every two years and determined by the MuseumsQuartier Errichtungs- und Betriebsgesellschaft via online voting based on a three- or four-person proposal. Over the years the following colors have been chosen or used:

  • Swimming pool blue (2003)
  • Light Pink (2004)
  • Pistachio Green (2005)
  • Joyful Red (2006)
  • Creamy Beige (2007)
  • Fast Austrian violet (2008), alternative selection: Near-therapeutic green
  • Lemon Ice Yellow (2009), alternative selection: May meadow green
  • Candy Shop Pink (2010), selection alternatives: Strawberry Fields (red), Lush Meadow (green), Down Town (gray)
  • Lush Meadow Green, Strawberry Field Red, Candy Shop Pink, Ivory Tusk White (2011, without voting)
  • Tröpferlbadblau (2013), selection alternatives: Havana red, folk furniture orange
  • Mermaid (turquoise) (2015), selection alternatives: Tangerine (orange), Electro (light blue)
  • Twinnigreen (2017), alternative choices: Twinniorange, sport rubber red
  • Sunset (from April 5, 2018), alternatives for the voters were "Festival Mud" and "Sea Breeze"
  • Dragonfly (green) (2020), selection alternatives for hummingbird, city pigeon

The MQ courtyard furniture in the new color is set up in the main courtyard at the beginning of the “courtyard season”. Older models can be found in side courtyards or are sold "ex-yard" for € 600 each by the MuseumsQuartier Errichtungs- und Betriebsgesellschaft. Newly produced Enzos and Vienas can also be purchased there.

Urban symbol

The MQ courtyard furniture is now a symbol of the urban way of life. Among the Viennese city dwellers, the MuseumsQuartier (MQ) Vienna is an “urban oasis” or “public living room”; a development to which the courtyard furniture contributed significantly. In the warm months, the courtyard furniture is heavily frequented and used as a meeting point and for relaxation.

As part of the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna , 40 artists were invited to design courtyard furniture for the "EUROART" campaign, which the Vienna MuseumsQuartier (MQ) carried out together with ORF . By drawing lots, the artists were allocated a country participating in the Song Contest as a theme. The action was curated by three of the major art institutions in Vienna's MuseumsQuartier (MQ), the Leopold Museum , the mumok and the Kunsthalle Wien . The artistically designed courtyard furniture was exhibited in the main courtyard of the Vienna MuseumsQuartier from May 16 to 27, 2015 and was then auctioned for the benefit of the Neighbor in Need campaign for the earthquake victims in Nepal . The proceeds were 30,000 euros.

distribution

The Enzis are considered cult objects in the MuseumsQuartier. All Enzis in the inner courtyard are completely occupied, especially on sunny summer days. In 2010, Enzis were also placed in the Madrid Museum Triangle and in front of the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona to advertise Vienna. In 2013 WienTourismus installed Enzis in Gorky Park in Moscow. In 2014, the state capital Düsseldorf furnished Schadowplatz with May meadow green Enzis. In 2015, Enzis - some of them artistically designed - were set up on Hamburg's Reeperbahn. Since 2017 there are also some copies on the campus of the University of Bayreuth.
