The Andromeda Fountain is a fountain in the 1st district of Vienna, Inner City .
history
The Andromeda Fountain in the inner courtyard of the Old Town Hall was created in 1741 by Georg Raphael Donner . It is considered to be one of the last major works by the sculptor who died in the same year. The balcony above with the wrought iron grille dates back to 1725, when the city council's ordinances were read out on it.
layout
The late Baroque wall fountain with a basin made of Wöllersdorf stone is flanked by atlantic pillars, the two groups of putti represent the cardinal virtues and support the balcony. The fully plastic lead relief in the fountain niche represents a scene from Greek mythology . In the background you can see Perseus , who rushes to Andromeda on a Pegasus , who is in danger of being devoured by a sea monster.
