Mikkel Pederson Escholt (* between 1600 and 1610 in Skåne , † 1669 in Christiania ) was a Norwegian priest and scientist .

According to the Norske Leksikon store , Escholt was the first to use the term geology in modern times . From 1646 he was the chaplain of the Akershus Fortress in Oslo . From 1660 he served as a priest in Våler and wrote the Geologia Norvegica in 1657, which deals , among other things, with an earthquake in the southern Norwegian fell region on April 24, 1657. Escholt also addressed other geological issues in it. This was the first scientific paper to be published in Norway and the first to use the word geology in its current sense. In the past, the term " geognosy " was used for phenomena that Escholt described, while the term "geology" was reserved for more or less valid theories about the origin of the earth and the history of the planets. Escholt's book was translated into English and printed in London in 1663. This is how the word spread in world literature.
