history
Although the station itself only has a relatively short history, the northern line , which crosses the Handelskai here, is one of the oldest railway lines in Austria. It can be traced back to the 1830s. The line in its current form has existed since the opening of the then Kaiser-Ferdinand-Nordbahnbrücke in 1874, the current Nordbahnbrücke was opened in 1957. The official opening of the main S-Bahn line crossing Handelskai took place in 1962.
The station itself was only designed and realized in the 1990s as a junction for several routes. The station on the main route was simply inserted into the existing route. The U6 station was part of the then newly built underground line from Nußdorfer Straße to Floridsdorf , with which it was opened in 1996. At the same time, the S45 from Heiligenstadt was extended over the suburban line Danube Canal Bridge to the newly opened platform on the Donauländebahn. With the opening of the Millenniumcity shopping center in 1999 and the connected multiplex cinema, the number of passengers increased. In 2010, the Rivergate office complex north of Maria-Restituta-Platz, which was started in 2008, was ready for occupancy, which once again brought more passengers. In 2018, Wien Handelskai station was the sixth most frequented train station in Austria, with around 42,500 passengers entering and exiting each day.
location
The side platforms of the ÖBB station on the main route of the Vienna S-Bahn extend at an elevated position between the Nordbahnbrücke and Maria-Restituta-Platz and cross both the Handelskai and the central platform on the Donauuferbahn , which runs at right angles to it between the Handelskai and the The promenade is located on the Danube dam. The platforms on the main line are served by regional trains and four S-Bahn lines on the main line. The trains of the S45 line begin or end at the platform edges of the Donauuferbahn, which turns directly southeast of the station on a stump track and continues on the suburban line to Vienna Hütteldorf . The U6 line stops at its own side platforms, which are parallel to those of the main S-Bahn line. Bus lines 5A, 11A and 11B stop in Engerthstraße, on the other side of Maria-Restituta-Platz. It is named after the Handelskai , which was named in 1884 after the Danube regulation and is one of the most important transport axes in Vienna.
Station building
The side platforms of the main line and the U-Bahn are located directly in front of the adjoining Danube bridges in parallel in an elevated position, with the platforms of the S-Bahn towards Floridsdorf and the U6 towards Siebenhirten being connected to each other. The island platform of the suburban line S45 is located at street level between the right bank of the Danube and Handelskai, which has its terminus here on the Danube bank. Elevators, escalators and fixed staircases lead from the upper platforms to the reception hall located under the supporting structure at Maria-Restituta-Platz (Engerthstraße exit). Stairs also lead down to the Donaupromenade exit. The platform of the S45 can only be reached from the platforms above using fixed stairs and an elevator. The platforms are 150 meters long.
Classical music has been playing on the station's platforms since summer 2018. This is intended to reassure passengers. So far, this facility only exists at Handelskai station. An expansion to other Viennese train stations is not ruled out.
