The Wolkersdorf station was opened on November 24, 1870 by the privileged Austro-Hungarian State Railroad Company when the Vienna – Laa an der Thaya – Brno railway was opened to traffic. The local hired coachmen and carters had enforced that the station was built far outside the market square, as they feared a shift of traffic to the railway. With the construction of the railway, Wolkersdorf experienced an initial phase of upswing. This is how the Bahnviertel came into being near the train station, which, in addition to railway workers and factory workers, also attracted civil servants, employees and private individuals from Vienna. Between 1869 and 1920 the number of houses in the place doubled.

The railway line was planned to be double-tracked from the start, but was then only made single-track on a double-track substructure. In 1909 the company was taken over by the kk Österreichische Staatsbahnen . The connection to Moravia has been interrupted since the end of the Second World War in 1945 . In 1983 the electrification of the Vienna – Mistelbach line was completed and the S2 line of the Vienna S-Bahn from Vienna to Wolkersdorf and Mistelbach was introduced with the construction of loop systems between the Laaer Ostbahn and the Nordbahn at the Süßenbrunn junction .

In 2005, the double-track expansion of the railway line between Gerasdorf near Vienna and Wolkersdorf was completed and a quarter-hour cycle was set up during rush hour between Vienna and Wolkersdorf train station. The Mistelbach – Laa an der Thaya route has also been electrified since 2006.

In 2012, the park-and-ride facility was expanded from 500 to 870 parking spaces, with an investment of 2.6 million euros. In November 2011, a temporary facility with 100 additional parking spaces was put into operation. In August 2012, rail operations were switched to right-hand traffic. The barrier-free renovation of the station started in September 2012. The platforms were raised, three lifts installed in the pedestrian tunnel and a guidance system for the blind installed. The completion took place in summer 2014.

After the full opening of the Vienna Central Station , there will be the possibility of running a new S-Bahn line from the Vienna Meidling station via Vienna Central Station and Vienna Stadlau to Wolkersdorf or Gänserndorf . The advantages would be faster access to the main station than via the main S-Bahn line and a connection to the 22nd district. The implementation of this timetable concept by ÖBB Personenverkehr AG depends on the financing from the service purchaser.

Infrastructure

Wolkersdorf train station is located between Bahnstrasse and the Wolkersdorf-Ost industrial center and stretches from Brünner Strasse to Johann-Schramm-Gasse.

The station building , a two-storey eaves construction with a gable roof, is to the east of the tracks. It has a central projectile on both sides with a triangular gable . A canopy is built on the house platform as rain protection for travelers. In the station concourse you will find ticket offices, ticket machines, a pizzeria, tobacco shop , bakery and waiting rooms.

Park-and-ride facilities and bus stops are located on both sides of the railway system. The Raiffeisen warehouse in Wolkersdorf is located at the southeast end of the railway system .

Wolkersdorf station has a total of four tracks and three platform edges. The house platform 1 is located directly in front of the reception building. Platforms 2 and 3 are located in a staggered position in the direction of Vienna on a shared island platform and can be reached through an underpass with stairs and elevators from the site north and south of the railway system. Another track is used for freight traffic. Until the renovation in 2013, the station had two more freight tracks, one of which also served as a loading track for the warehouse.

passenger traffic

From Wolkersdorf train station trains run north to Mistelbach and occasionally to Laa an der Thaya or south to Vienna Meidling, Mödling and Leobersdorf. There are also regional trains in the direction of Vienna and Laa an der Thaya.

Along the Laaer Ostbahn, Wolkersdorf station is the traffic station with the densest range of passenger train connections. In addition to the Mistelbach and Laa an der Thaya stations , it is one of the three stations along the line where all passenger trains stop.

Trains in the direction of Mistelbach and Laa an der Thaya run as scheduled from platform 1. Trains in the direction of Vienna run from platform 2 or 3, with platform 3 being used by those trains coming from Vienna that end in Wolkersdorf, stopping there and then back again drive back to Vienna.

Wolkersdorf is connected to the state capital St. Pölten with line A of the Wieselbus . Various regional bus routes connect Wolkersdorf with the surrounding communities and Vienna- Floridsdorf , and there is also a connection to the AST Wolkersdorf shared call taxi .
