The S- and U-Bahn station Wien Hauptbahnhof-Südtiroler Platz is a transfer hub in the area of Südtiroler Platz and part of the Vienna Central Station . It was partially opened at the end of the 1950s under the name Wien Südtiroler Platz , but has only been integrated into the main train station that went into operation on December 9, 2012. It consists of the S-Bahn station Wien Hauptbahnhof-Südtiroler Platz , the U-Bahn station Südtiroler Platz - Hauptbahnhof , some stops on inner-city tram and bus lines and the bus station of regional and international bus lines. In addition, from the timetable change in December 2017 to the timetable change in December 2019, the WESTblue line to Salzburg served it.

location

The traffic station is located on the district border between the 4th district of Vienna ( Wieden ) and the 10th district ( Favoriten ) at the intersection of the Wiedner Gürtels (state road B221) and Favoritenstraße called Südtiroler Platz . The Wiedner Gürtel runs in an east-west direction and crosses the Südtiroler Platz in an underpass. The Favoritenstraße crosses the Südtiroler Platz in a north-south direction; Immediately to the south, Laxenburger Strasse takes on the car and tram traffic of Favoritenstrasse, which is a pedestrian zone from there. The station forecourt was laid out southeast of the intersection.

Between Südtiroler Platz and Laxenburger Straße, Favoritenstraße is crossed by the Südbahn on a bridge. This was rebuilt from 2009 to 2012 when the route had to be swiveled to the southeast with the demolition of the old south station and the new construction of the main station.

history

In order to be able to offer more space to the ever-increasing road traffic in the 1950s, the Viennese city administration decided in 1956 to relocate the Südtiroler Platz tram station of line 18 on the Gürtel to an underpass. At the same time, four lanes of the Wiedner Belt were to drive under Favoritenstrasse. At the same time, the ÖBB started work on the express train tunnel and the stop on the main S-Bahn line . The Ustrab line under the Wiedner Gürtel and the Margaretengürtel was connected to the tram underpass in 1969 . The U1 station was opened on February 25, 1978.

The above-mentioned installations included a connecting structure between the older part of the traffic station and the underground station, which was built until 1978. The facilities were redesigned as part of the renovation or are no longer accessible to the public due to the creation of the new passage.

Latest remodeling

In the course of the construction of the main train station, the traffic station was fundamentally renovated and adapted from 2007 to 2012 in cooperation with the Vienna City Administration, Wiener Linien and ÖBB.

Not only were the technical systems and surfaces renewed, but new and larger access routes were also created. Extensive work was also necessary at the rapid transit station. At the beginning of the construction work, the ceiling of the cut-and-cover tunnel was removed. As the next step, the two side platforms were extended to 210 m and the overhead contact line replaced with overhead conductor rails . The removed ceiling was then rebuilt. This also resulted in additional exits to Argentinierstrasse. The most important intervention, however, consisted of the construction of a new pedestrian passage that connects the underground station directly with the northern station concourse. In addition, all other public transport on the north side of the main train station is linked to it. It crosses under the Gürtel carriageway, the stop of the tram line 18 and the S-Bahn trunk line, all of which run at this point in a low position. What is special is that the underpass is equipped with viewing windows to the underground tram and S-Bahn routes. Passengers walking there are therefore given a clear view of the two track areas. In the area of the tram route, daylight also gets into the structure, as the passage is below the open entrance ramp to the underground tram . An information point for Wiener Linien and a branch of a large Viennese bakery were also built in the newly created passage . The connection to the northern station concourse took place in October 2014.

The view of Südtiroler Platz in 2010 shows in the foreground on the right the first part of the western entrance to the new main station, behind it the now demolished southern railway bridge and the station signal box, which is no longer in existence.

The S-Bahn station under Südtiroler Platz has two side platforms in an open-cut tunnel. The S-Bahn went into full operation on January 17, 1962. On December 9, 2012, the Vienna Central Station went into partial operation. On this date, the S-Bahn stop was renamed Vienna Central Station . From an organizational point of view, it is regarded as part of the main train station and is one of a total of 12 tracks with a platform. It was given the prominent track numbers 1 and 2 due to its by far strongest train frequency. In addition to the S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S3 and S4, all other trains on the main line also stop here . Lines S60 and S80 stop in the above-ground part of the station at platforms 3–4 (S80) and 11–12 (S60).

Subway

U-Bahn exit at Südtiroler Platz

The underground station of the U1 line is located three floors below Favoritenstraße , between the confluence of Kolschitzkygasse or Weyringergasse and Wiedner Gürtel. It has a central platform and was opened on February 25, 1978 as part of the commissioning of the first section of the U1 between Reumannplatz and Karlsplatz . The two tubes of the U1 were built using a closed construction method and pass under the other traffic structures at a depth of around 20 meters. Exits from the underground station lead on both sides to Favoritenstrasse and Südtiroler Platz. The distribution passage to the train station and other means of transport is connected to the latter on a mezzanine floor. On December 9, 2012, the name of the station Südtiroler Platz was only given the addition of the main station , as representatives of South Tyrol , for which Austria acts as a protective power under international law , had spoken to the city administration in favor of retaining the historic station name. In December 2014, however, the subway station should also be renamed the Hauptbahnhof ; but this has not happened to date.

tram

The underground tram station on line 18, which consists of two side platforms for two trains each, was opened to traffic on May 7, 1959. The tram line O, coming from the east on the Wiedner Gürtel, stops at an above-ground stop, as it turns into Laxenburger Strasse and does not follow the Gürtel. Both tram stations are named Hauptbahnhof . The tracks of lines 66, 67 and 167 running over Favoritenstraße fell victim to the newly opened U1 in 1978.

The Hauptbahnhof Ost stop of tram line D is spatially far away from the traffic station described here. It is located in Karl-Popper-Straße directly under the railway structure and can be reached via the eastern platform exits.

Bus

Südtiroler Platz bus station

The urban bus lines 13A and 69A stop like the tram line O in the vicinity of the northern station forecourt. Line 13A also serves the Kolschitzkygasse stop near the station at the northern exit of the U1 station. With the start of construction of the main train station in 2009, Vienna's largest bus station , which was completed in 1959 and is mainly served by regional bus routes going south , was relocated from its location east of Favoritenstrasse to the so-called Waldmanngrund west of the road, also north of the railway body and south of the belt newly built.

Artistic arrangement

The passage, which connects the U1 station, the S-Bahn station and the main train station, was designed in 2012 by concept artist Franz Graf with four murals. In doing so, he has combined a wide variety of motifs from his artistic archive into compositions. Comparable to film sequences or dream images, the elements of geometric symbols, reduced text fragments and typefaces, patterns of organic structures and abstract portrait photos fit together. The installation entitled “SUED” was digitally printed on glass.

On the platform of tram line 18 in the direction of Schlachthausgasse there is a ceramic mosaic designed by Rudolf Hausner with a perspective view of Vienna with relief elements. The work of art bears the name "Vienna panorama with traffic lines" and was created in 1959 in the course of the construction of the Südtiroler Platz traffic structure. In order to preserve the mosaic, a slightly reduced replica of the mural was made in 2012 in agreement with the Department of Culture of the City of Vienna . The original is still in its original location, on the opposite platform, but is no longer accessible due to fixtures during the renovation work.
