The Donauinsel station on Vienna's U1 subway line is in the 22nd district of Vienna, Donaustadt . It is named after the Donauinsel recreation area . In the course of the opening of the 5th section of the U1, it was handed over to its intended use on September 3, 1982. The collapse of the "old" Reichsbrücke just six years earlier accelerated the expansion of the underground to the districts on the left (northeast) of the Danube. The Donauinsel station owes its location and appearance to this event.
The station is located in a box girder under the Reichsbrücke and extends from the bank of the New Danube , the relief channel, to the Danube Island. The platforms are located as side platforms in two parallel tubes, separated from each other. Exits at the northern end of the platforms lead via fixed stairs (i.e. not barrier-free) to Hubertusdamm and at the southern end through a reception building under the structure of the Reichsbrücke directly to the Danube Island. The only barrier-free entrances to the station are to the left or right of the directional platforms and lead to the footpath and bike path alongside the underground enclosure. Wheelchair users can reach the Danube Island via ramps. This access was created in 2003 and 2004 during a general renovation of the Reichsbrücke. On this occasion, the station was also equipped with viewing windows on the Danube and Danube Island.
