The Taubstummengasse underground station is a station on the Vienna underground line U1 that opened on February 25, 1978 . The two-storey station is located on the Wieden , in a low position directly under the carriageway of the busy Favoritenstrasse shopping street and has a central platform. Exits lead to Mayerhofgasse and Floragasse.

The station was built in the 1970s using the open construction method and designed according to the concept of the U-Bahn architects ( Wilhelm Holzbauer , H. Marschalek, G. Ladstätter and B. Gantar) with the signal color red of the U1 . Together with the stations at Karlsplatz , Südtiroler Platz , Keplerplatz and Reumannplatz , the Taubstummengasse station is one of the stations on the first new line of the Vienna subway that opened after the Second World War . The Theresianum and the Funkhaus are in the immediate vicinity .

First test track

In 1969 the construction of the underground line U1 began on Karlsplatz in Vienna. Due to the open construction, the section to Taubstummengasse was completed relatively quickly. The first metro trains could be tested on this route, while construction was still going on on other sections of the route. This test operation was also ensured by a turning system and a siding for an underground train set, which had been built after the Taubstummengasse station below Favoritenstrasse in the direction of Südtiroler Platz . The station operation could be simulated in this environment typical for other subway station buildings.

On August 18, 1973, the first subway car was lowered into the shaft at Karlsplatz. The first test drives between Karlsplatz and Taubstummengasse began on September 22, 1973. A longer test track for the “Silver Arrows” was only opened in 1976 on the mostly above-ground tracks of today's U4 between Heiligenstadt and Friedensbrücke.

The turning system existed until summer 2012. In the course of renovation work, however, it was replaced by a transfer point so that the operation no longer has to be completely interrupted in the event of a fault.

First guidance system for the blind

Taubstummengasse was the first Vienna underground station to have a guidance system for the blind. The central platform with the stairways at the ends seemed best suited for initial tests. In 1993, seven parallel raised lines of black floor marking paint about 3 cm wide were drawn along the platform to form a 40 cm wide guide strip.

After the opening of a lift, the guidance system for the blind was also renewed by May 5, 2004. In the course of the renovation, the old system, which was still palpable despite some signs of wear and tear, was partially replaced. Instead of black marking, white floor marking paint was now used, as was the case with the guidance systems for the blind in the Vienna underground. The guidance system now comprises ten parallel strips.

Last retrofitted passenger lift

Due to the station's cramped location, no passenger elevator could originally be installed. However, the demand for barrier-free use of the subway by wheelchair users has been made more and more frequently by organizations for the disabled. Although the City of Vienna initiated a retrofitting program for passenger elevators in all Vienna underground stations in 1995, it took until April 28, 2004 for an elevator to open here to conclude this expansion program. The Taubstummengasse station was the last to be retrofitted with a lift - more than 26 years after its opening. Subway stations built in the future must have such lift systems from the moment they open.

The subway had just started here in the 1970s in order to create more space for car traffic in the busy Favoritenstraße leading into the city center and to lower the then congested public rail traffic below street level. Now it turned out that a direct lift from the central platform of the station would require a traffic island in the middle of the street and thus a narrowing of the carriageway and corresponding traffic lights for crossing. For this reason, a solution was discussed for a long time, which provided for guiding the elevator from the platform to the mezzanine floor with the possibility of changing to a second passenger elevator further away from the station. Finally, after the experience with the Nestroyplatz underground station , where a similar lift had to be retrofitted, the decision was made to use the lift directly.
