The Vienna Stadlau station is the largest railway system in Vienna's 22nd district , Donaustadt , and extends from Neuhaufenstrasse to Hirschstettner Strasse . In addition to the actual Vienna Stadlau train station and the associated Vienna Erzherzog-Karl-Straße stop, it includes the Stadlau and Stadlau-Nord freight stations . A station on the U2 underground line has existed here since 2010 .
The Vienna Erzherzog-Karl-Straße stop is located in the northern area of the extensive freight train tracks of Stadlau station at the junction of the Marchegger Ostbahn from the Laaer Ostbahn .
history
Stadlau station was put into operation in 1870; Since then, the Laaer Ostbahn , one of the two Viennese rail connections with Brno until 1945 , and the Marchegger Ostbahn to Pressburg , once a route of the classic Orient Express, have branched out here . The trains on both routes leave from Vienna Central Station (then Südbahnhof / Ostbahn ), 10.5 km from the Stadlau station building, which was closed in 2010. (The Vienna Erzherzog-Karl-Straße stop is at 11.3 km.) With the construction of the Eastern Railway and the Vienna Danube Regulation completed in 1875, the previously insignificant village of Stadlau developed into a larger railway and industrial location, which was incorporated into Vienna in 1904.
New connecting structure
On October 2, 2010, a new connection structure was opened as a transfer hub between the trains of the ÖBB ( S-Bahn line S80 and regional trains) and the underground line U2 . At the same time, the old platforms of the historic station location at the level of the street Am Bahnhof were abandoned. The newly built platforms are located further south on Kaisermühlenstraße and are each designed as a double platform for the ÖBB and the subway, connected by escalators, fixed stairs and lifts.
The connecting structure extends from Neuhaufenstraße (southern exit of the ÖBB platform) to Konstanziagasse (northern exit of the U2 platform). The Stadlau underground station is also the highest station in the Vienna underground network.
Design
The figure “Nepomuk” by the Tyrolean artist Werner Feiersinger has been on a pillar on the east side of the station building since 2010 . It refers to the bridge saint Johannes Nepomuk (around 1350-1392) and corresponds to the silhouette of the Nepomuk figure on Prague's Charles Bridge . The figure was formed from stainless steel by the Buchsbaum art smithy in Waldhausen , Upper Austria and painted red by Feiersinger.
