Waldhausen im Strudengau is a market town in the district of Perg in the Lower Mühlviertel in Upper Austria with 2853 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The competent district court of the municipality, which has belonged to the judicial district of Perg since 2003 (previously to the former judicial district of Grein ), is located in Perg .

Waldhausen im Strudengau is 470 m above sea level in the Mühlviertel. The extension is 11.9 km from north to south and 8.3 km from west to east. The total area is 46.7 km². 52.% of the area is forested, 43.7% of the area is used for agriculture. In 1973 the Sarmingbach was dammed above the Waldhausen Abbey and the approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hectare Waldhausen swimming lake was created.

Community structure

Until 2020, the municipality comprised the following eight localities: Dendlreith , Dörfl, Ettenberg , Gloxwald , Handberg, Sattlgai , Schloßberg, Waldhausen im Strudengau. Since 2020 the municipality has only consisted of one village.

The community consists of the cadastral community Waldhausen.

history

Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century. Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns .

During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times.

Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.

Official description of the municipal coat of arms : In black on a green three-mountain, a silver, chapel-like house with two black open windows on the long side, and a similar round arched door and a small window on the front, covered in red and decorated with a gold cross on each of the two gables; flanked on the right and left by a green conifer. The community colors are green-yellow-red.

Waldhausen im Strudengau Abbey and Collegiate Church
  • former Waldhausen monastery : established in 1147, abolished in 1792 by Leopold II.
  • Waldhausen Collegiate Church: built 1647–1680 in early Baroque style under master builder Carlo Canevale , impressive, bright church interior with stucco and frescoes, flooded with light through side windows; From 1669 there is a 19 m high high altar in black and gold by the master carpenter Paul Deniffl from Passau. The church houses the so-called Waldhausen mummies , which are not open to the public.
