The Säbnich castle ruins are located in the municipality of Waldhausen im Strudengau in the Perg district of Upper Austria . The ruins of the hilltop castle is reached when the street from Sarmingstein strikes direction Waldhausen, Strudengau. After about three kilometers you come to a sharp bend with a driveway to a farm; from here you can walk to the outermost spur section.
history
The oldest name of this facility comes from the year 985 and is "Sabebnikke". Around 1124 the castle was owned by the highly free Otto von Machland († 1149). He and his wife Julia von Peilstein donated the castle in 1147 for the foundation of a monastery for the Augustinian Canons . The monks moved the monastery to Waldhausen as early as 1161 . The castle was then left to decay. Reading finds (ceramic shards) indicate a short period of settlement at the site in the 12th century. Postal and surrounding forest land still belonged in the 18th century Domini Kalbe seat of the monastery.
Säbnich castle ruins today
According to the unanimous opinion of medieval archaeologists and castle researchers, Säbnich Castle is located on the so-called Burgstall, a prominent mountain on a loop of the Sarmingbach .
The location shows the remains of a “permanent house” as well as a semicircular wall and ditch system. The core plant has a length of 52 m and a width of 10 to 16 m. The facility has been severely affected by the construction of a forest road. The semicircular moat was almost completely destroyed during these activities. The remains of the wall of a square tower visible on the hilltop have disappeared under the undergrowth after the last reforestation, but should still be there. The lidar recordings of the Upper Austrian geographic information system show that the former access road from the northern Sarmingbach led in an arc shape to the top of the mountain. Reading finds (ceramic shards) indicate a short period of settlement at the site in the 12th century.
